Company Visit - TAL Group

Background

TAL apparel limited is a Hong Kong based apparel manufacturer that has over 60 years industry experience. The company has 11 world-wide manufacturing factories and produces more than 50 million apparel products. Since TAL has competitive advantages in this industry such as deployed in technology development, it becomes a dominator in the Western market. This makes TAL overcome industry changes and get closer to its retailer and customers.

Feedback

Since the course is about logistics and supply chain management, what we acquired in the visit is actually related to it. For example, we learnt what replenishment models TAL using (QR,CR, store and warehouse VMI), what supply chain services TAL providing (Cross Docking, Pick-to-light) and how they review their performance by scorecard. All these content provided me more understandings about how a business runs their logistics and supply chain management, especially by such a successful and company. 


After receiving the presentation from TAL Group, I realized that how the presentation skill is so important. I still remember that the presenter looks really young like us but she can present the overview of business practice and operations with well-organized slides fluently and clearly. That inspires me to improve my presentation skill, especially in English.



Moreover, I found that they have well-organized the visit with good team work. They have different people responsible for different parts of the visit. That inspires me how important the project management and the team work in a company are.

After the visit, I have more understandings of the business practice and operations of TAL Group. However, due to the short period of time for the visit, we can just a brief overview of the company. Hence, I do not really get an in-depth understanding of the business practice and operations but I know more about how a business runs in the real world. Actually, I prefer to obtain a more in-depth understanding of some specific part of the company, especially the supply chain management. 

Last but not least, I also found that TAL Group not only focuses on earning money, but also puts much effort on social corporate responsibility. That inspires me that as a global citizen, we have to be responsible to our general public. We cannot sacrifice other people’s interests for our own advantages.  

Q&A Section


Q: Since fashion trend changes day by day, how do TAL maintain the efficiency of supply chain management?


ANS: The representative answered that collaboration with factories and better utilized to capacity can maintain efficiency.They still manufacture basic products based on the customers demand.Other fashionable products are manufactured with collaboration of different partner of supply chain.

Q: Will TAL further develop an online platform for direct sales to customers?ANS:They answered that there is a online platform directly link to their factories only.The real time data collection will improve efficiency and shorten response time for product.This is another way to support their client.

Q: We all know that TAL has been using IT to gain a big success. However, most companies are likely to follow the strategy to succeed by using the similar IT systems. How could you continuously keep the company in business in terms of market share?

ANS: TAL keep fighting for market share nowadays.As the staff have mentioned that people and spirit is hard for competitors to copy.They emphasize the importance of people.So that why TAL focus more on people development by invest more resources on that.

Q: Why has TAL not gone into retailing its own products under its own brand?

ANS: In fact, TAL has their own brand for men products in New York.

Q: How does TAL show their Corporate Social Responsibility in the sense of being environmentally friendly?

ANS: Department of TAL where in France has meet the water treatment. TAL is leading position in green house mention.It is because there is reduce green house emission such as carbon reduction around 20% to 22% and water used when washing the textile. TAL has a certificate (LEED) that show their responsibility on environmental friendly.Their factories would recycle water to cool the machine down and result that water reduction about 15%.
